HungryRaccoon

Privacy policy

The short version

HungryRaccoon ("we", "us", "our") keeps what you need for an account and what you choose to share: your email, a username, your birthday, and the ratings, reviews, photos and lists you save. Your ratings and lists are private unless you choose to make them public, and your email is never shown to anyone. The app only uses your location, camera, photos or contacts if you allow it. We don't sell your information, and we don't show ads. You can delete your account, and everything in it, from inside the app.

This website collects nothing about you: no forms, no cookies, no analytics and no advertising trackers.

Who we are

HungryRaccoon is a social food app for Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This policy covers the HungryRaccoon app on iPhone and Android, and this website, hungryraccoonapp.com. We are responsible for the information described here. For anything about your privacy, email [email protected]. If we publish this policy in other languages, the English version applies where they differ.

What the app collects

Your account. Your email address and a password, or, if you sign in with Apple or Google, the name and email address they share with us. Your birthday, so we know you're old enough and whether you need a parent's permission. We use your email to send you sign-in codes and to contact you about your account. Passwords are stored only in scrambled (hashed) form, so we can't read them.

Your profile. A username, and if you add them, a display name, a short bio, a profile photo and a phone number.

What you rate and save. The places you rate, how you felt about each one (liked, fine or disliked), where it ranks among your others, the score that follows from that, any review or photo you add, and when you rated it. Also the places you save as Want to try, Been here or Favourites, the lists you make and the notes on them, and the cuisines and areas you pick when you set up the app.

People. Who you follow, the lists you save, the people you block, and any report you send us about a person, a review or a list.

Only if you allow it. Your phone asks you first, and you can change your answer at any time in your phone's settings:

Location, to show places near you. Camera and photos, to add pictures of your food or a profile photo. Contacts, to find friends who already use HungryRaccoon. Notifications, to tell you about new followers and activity; for this your phone gives us a notification address for your device.

How the app is used. To fix problems and improve the app, we record how it's used: which screens you open, what you tap, what you search for (the first 64 characters), and crash reports with your phone's model and system version. This is linked to your account ID, never your email or name, and you can turn it off with the "Share usage data" switch in Profile. Test versions of the app may also record your screen, with everything you type and every photo hidden.

On your phone only. The app keeps your sign-in, your recent searches and a few settings on your phone. They aren't sent to us.

Why we use it

We use your information to run HungryRaccoon for you: to keep your account, save your ratings and lists, show them to the people you choose, show you places nearby and what your friends rate, and tell you what's new. We need it to provide the app you asked for, so if you don't give it, you can still browse places, but you can't rate, save or follow.

We also use it to keep the app safe and working: to limit how fast an account can post, so spam and abuse are harder, to review reports, and to find and fix crashes.

Ads. We don't show ads, and we don't sell your information or trade it. If we ever add ads, we'll update this policy and tell you at least 14 days before.

What other people can see

Public: your username, display name, bio and profile photo; who you follow and who follows you; the ratings, reviews and photos you choose to show, by turning on "Show on the restaurant's page" when you rate (it starts off); and any list you make public. Anyone can see these, in the app and through share links, without needing an account. We may also feature public ratings, reviews, photos and lists on our own social media (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and LinkedIn), with your username. Once something is public, others can see, copy or screenshot it, and we can't pull those copies back.

Private: your email, your password, your ratings and lists unless you make them public, your saved lists, the people you've blocked, the reports you send, the cuisines and areas you picked, your contacts and your location. Your birthday and phone number are private too, unless you choose to show them on your profile. A rating or list you make private disappears from everyone else's view straight away.

Shared list links. When you share a public list, anyone with the link can open it on this website. If you make the list private again, the link stops working.

Who we share it with

We use a few services to run HungryRaccoon. They handle your information only to provide their service to us, and we don't let them use it for anything else:

Our hosting provider stores the app's database and photos, handles sign-in, and runs this website. Our email provider sends sign-in codes and account emails. Our analytics and crash reporting providers receive the usage information described above.

Apple and Google provide the maps, sign-in with Apple or Google if you use it, and notifications. Google also hosts the restaurant photos, so your phone loads them from Google's servers, and Google sees your phone's IP address when it does.

If you'd like to know the names of the providers we use right now, email us and we'll tell you.

We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect people from harm. If HungryRaccoon is ever sold or merged, your information would move with it under this policy, and we'd tell you first.

Where it's stored

Your information is stored by our providers on servers outside Cambodia.

How long we keep it, and deleting your account

We keep your information for as long as you have an account. You can delete your account in the app, under Profile. That deletes your profile, ratings, reviews, photos, lists, follows, blocks and saved lists straight away, and the usage information linked to your account. Reports you sent stay, without your name on them, so we can still deal with the abuse they describe. Our providers may keep backups and technical logs for a short time after that. They're kept apart and not used for anything until they're overwritten.

Can't use the app? Email [email protected] from the email address on your account and ask us to delete it. We'll delete it within 30 days and email you when it's done.

Your rights

You can ask us to show you the information we hold about you, give you a copy of it, correct it, delete it, or stop using it for a particular purpose. You can change your profile, ratings and lists yourself in the app at any time. For anything else, email [email protected]. We'll reply within one month and won't charge you.

If you live outside Cambodia, you may have further rights under your own country's laws, and we'll respect them.

Keeping it safe

Your connection to the app is encrypted, passwords are hashed, and the database only lets each person read and change what they're allowed to. No system is perfectly secure, though. If a breach puts your information at risk, we'll tell you as soon as we can, and tell the authorities where the law requires it.

Age

You must be 13 or older to make a HungryRaccoon account, and if you're under 18, you need a parent or guardian's permission. We ask for your birthday when you sign up to check this. If you think someone under 13 has made an account, email us and we'll delete it.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update it here and change the date at the top. If the change matters, such as collecting something new, we'll also tell you in the app at least 14 days before it takes effect.
